New Tasmanian Clean Energy Centre of Excellence

A new Tasmanian Clean Energy Centre of Excellence will be established through a jointly funded project by the Australian and Tasmanian governments. Funded through the National Skills Agreement and located at TasTAFE’s Burnie campus, the centre will play a crucial role in cultivating a skilled workforce for the Tasmanian clean energy industry.

With a focus on trades that support clean energy infrastructure as well as installers for home and business rooftop solar and batteries, Burnie was selected for its proximity to the proposed North West Renewable Energy Zone and the region’s significant current and planned pipeline of development in the clean energy sector.

The centre will drive growth in the clean energy sector by attracting and training more Tasmanians for a career in clean energy and related trades.

The development of the centre will be guided by an advisory committee with members being appointed from across industry, the clean energy sector and the north west community. The first meeting of the advisory committee will take place in late March.

Revised Standards for RTOs

The quality of training delivered in the VET system continues to be in the spotlight with revised Standards for RTOs in effect from 1 July 2025. The Standards have been revised to strengthen the focus on quality outcomes for learners and employers, provide greater clarity for RTOs and regulators, and allow for more flexibility and innovation in training delivery across the sector.

Changes to the Standards better reflect the diversity of the VET sector and ensure the Standards are fit-for-purpose across different RTO settings. The revised Standards provide a clearer and more direct link between the requirements RTOs are expected to meet and the outcomes they are expected to deliver.

Over the coming months, Skills Tasmania will work with the sector to ensure the Standards are understood. The instruments to enact the revised Standards for RTOs have now been registered on the Federal Register of Legislation.
