About the Tasmanian Skills Plan

The Tasmanian Skills Plan is the result of collaboration with a broad range of stakeholders including industry, business, learners, and training providers. It was finalised in November 2024.

The Tasmanian Skills Plan sets out the strategic direction for Tasmania’s training and workforce development system and informs Tasmanian Government funding priorities over the next five years (2024-2028).

It also establishes the Minister for Skills and Training’s Ministerial Priorities as required under the Training and Workforce Development Act 2013.

It outlines how we will grow Tasmania’s future workforce through investment in vocational education and training (VET) and complementary activities to meet skills and workforce needs, while supporting the learner at the centre of our skills and training system.

The Tasmanian Skills Plan is designed to be read in conjunction with Tasmania’s Jurisdictional Action Plan (PDF 472.2 KB), which outlines how Tasmania is delivering on the shared priorities of the National Skills Agreement and National Skills Plan while still being flexible to meet local needs.

The Tasmanian Training and Workforce Development System Performance Report (PDF 1.1 MB) forms part of the Jurisdictional Action Plan as the framework for reporting measures and outcomes at the jurisdictional level. The Performance Report is published by Skills Tasmania in April each year (for the previous calendar year).

Skills for jobs

Building a skilled workforce will place Tasmania in the best position to deliver outcomes for the Tasmanian economy and the community.

To support this theme, we will:

  • Continue to strategically purchase training aligned to Tasmanian industry, community and government needs
  • Continue to work with and listen to critical industries to ensure training investment meets workforce needs and addresses emerging challenges, particularly through our Industry Skills Compacts
  • Strengthen apprenticeships and traineeships, including supporting learners in the workplace and supporting employers to build positive learner experiences
  • Attract and retain skilled migrants and work with employers to raise awareness and understanding of skilled migration, and build employment skills for international students and graduates
  • Encourage and support more women to take part in training, including improving pathways for women into non-traditional occupations
  • Support excellence in our health and care, energy, and building and construction workforces through prioritised funding, investment and initiatives in these crucial sectors

Supporting learners to succeed

Successful learners need a training system that is accessible and provides opportunities for individualised and contextualised support.

To support this theme, we will:

  • Continue to find ways to better support learners, including enhancing wrap-around services available to learners to support completion
  • Fund training in rural and regional areas to meet specific demand and job opportunities
  • Build on apprentice and trainee support to ensure information is easy to access and clear, including promoting resources and finding gaps where we can support employers

Building a stronger, more connected system

A coordinated and collaborative training and workforce development system will lead to better outcomes, with all parts of the system working together to share the load.

To support this theme, we will:

  • Strengthen the Vocational Education and Training (VET) workforce, including working in partnership with industry to attract more trainers, and supporting the existing workforce with professional development
  • Invest in contemporary and innovative training resources, and support innovative technologies in training
  • Invest in both the public provider, TasTAFE, and a diverse range of private training providers, including support to improve the quality of training
  • Build the capability of Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations to deliver training and support services to Aboriginal learners undertaking VET
  • Update our systems to enhance services for users, including streamlined payments, improved data and cyber security
  • Celebrate success and promote the value of VET
